GREATGOLD – Half of the popular sixties duo, Chad & Jeremy, Chad Stuart, 79, (pic-left) passed away December 20, 2020 of Pneumonia. Chad & Jeremy were a soft-styled singing act concerned part of the “British Invasion” of musical groups that so-called “invaded” the American airwaves on radio stations and music recording store sales after the Beatles attracted the attention of the record-buying teenagers in the United States. The Chad & Jeremy recordings from the shores of England were a bit milder in sound than the Beatles, but, their unique melodic harmonies found a music niche enjoyed by more than one generation.
Some of the many memorable hit songs by Chad & Jeremy include “Yesterday’s Gone”, “Willow Weep For Me”, “A Summer Song”, “Distant Shores”, “If I Loved You”, “I Have Dreamed”, “Before and After”, and others. Stuart met Jeremy Clyde while attending school together in London. They soon formed their folk-pop duo and began refining their style, which centered on gentle acoustic guitar and softly sung romantic lyrics.
Chad & Jeremy had a hit at home in the United Kingdom in 1963 with “Yesterday’s Gone,” but they found even bigger sales and radio popularity success in the United States. “Yesterday’s Gone” climbed to the Top 40 in the USA in 1964, and they had their biggest hit the same year with “A Summer Song”, which made it to No. 7 on the Billboard chart. Later single sales in the United States included “Willow Weep for Me,” “If I Loved You,” and “Before and After.”
The popular duo appeared on U.S. TV shows including “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” “The Patty Duke Show,” and “Batman.” The duo broke up in 1968 and Stuart continued with his own musical career that included solo performances and producing jingles while Jeremy concentrated on an acting career. Chad & Jeremy reunited for several nostalgia tours over the years, performing together as recently as 2016.
